Photoshop Vector Elipses March 30 2006

I just learned a little trick from Miro on how to create lovely ellipses with a nice thick border in Photoshop.

Here are the steps :

1. Create a new fill layer (Layers -> New Fill Layer)

2. Change the opacity of the fill layer so you can see everything in the background (50% should do)

3. Select the Ellipse tool from the Vector Tool Basket

4. Create a perfect circle (Hold Shift while drawing)

5. Select and copy and paste the path (you won’t see the new path but it’ll be there and selected)

6. Transform the path (Ctrl-T) and use specific measures (e.g. H: 80%, W: 80%)

7. While still on the transformed path, select “Subtract from the shape area” (I believe you can just press the “-” key)

8. Now select the outer circle (the original large one) and create a vector mask with it (Right click -> Create vector mask)

Now you should have a nice thick circle with a transparent center.

To change this into an ellipse, un-select the vector mask and transform the entire layer.

Enjoy!
